Yards Brewing Company: The Cape of Good Hope

Epic Ale.  That's what you will read upon coming face to face with a six pack of Yards Brewing Companies Cape of Good Hope.  Not the familiar IPA, Tripel, Imperial, or Pale, but Epic Ale.  This is going to be fun.

Upon cracking open one of these twelve ounce babies, an enticing and unique aroma of hops swarms my nostrils.  Cascade definitely, but is that Calypso and Columbus?  This gets more interesting by the second.   By the time I tilt the bottle at a 45 degree angle and unleash the amber goodness, my hand is near trembling.

This truly epic beer pours a deep reddish amber that culminates in a slight foamy head.  Once unleashed from the bottle the hops, against all odds, become more even more pronounced.  I can't wait to take a sip...I mean gulp.

It hits the palate with a right cross Mike Tyson would envy.  Somehow these Philadelphia brewers have worked an unprecedented complexity into the typically standard IPA.  From floral, to fruity, to citrus the flavors and aromas perpetually morph.  Passion fruit comes to mind.  Deep flavors are present, yet COGH is surprisingly smooth and well balanced.  The bitterness excellently complemented by a fruity, almost tropical aftertaste.  If you couldn't already tell it's absolutely brilliant, yet predictably, all too soon the Imperial IPA is gone.  Fortunately, five remain.

Aroma:   Smooth, Complex, Rich

Taste:  Slightly bitter, fading to a mildly sweet, fruity deliciousness.

Do yourself a favor, spend the extra two dollars and enjoy a glass of divinity.

Rating: 9/10
